Jewels of Russia - Upstream

From Moscow to Saint Petersburg

Fom May to September 2015

Aboard the M/S Kandinsky Prestige - 11 days / 10 nights

This extraordinary journey that connects the two capitals of Russia is the ideal way to explore Russia and its present and past architectural jewels.

 Day 1 : MOSCOW

Arrival in Moscow and transfer to the « Maritime Vokzal » and embarkation. You will be welcome on board by the “Bread & Salt” ceremony (except on late arrival). Dinner & overnight on board.

Moscou-Basile coupoles
After breakfast, morning orientation tour to all the famous sights to give you a first taste of Russia’s capital atmosphere. The Ring, Bolshoi Theatre (exterior sight), the Lomonossov University. Visit of Novodievitchi Monastery (New Maiden Convent), one of the finest examples of 16 – 19th architecture, located on the territory of a former convent for ladies of noble birth. Afternoon at leisure or optional excursion. Breakfast & Dinner on board. Lunch at a city restaurant.

Morning visit of the Kremlin: the beating heart of Russia’s political world. The imposing walls house a number of stunning cathedrals & monuments.  Guided visit of one of the Cathedrals. Afternoon free or optional tour. Continue sailing to Uglich at 5.30 pm. After departure, welcome cocktail and presentation of the Captain and the crew on Sun Deck (Weather permitting). All meals on board.

Arrive at Uglich in the early afternoon. Enjoy a walking tour of the city and Kremlin. Founded in 1148, Uglich is one of the most beloved towns in old Russia. The view of the town as it is approached from the Volga River is especially lovely with the Cathedral of the Resurrection and St John’s Church looming on the horizon. See also the Church of St. Demetrius of the Blood and the oldest building, the Kremlin. All meals on board

As we continue our journey, you will enjoy the breathtaking scenery as you sail through the White Lake and the Volga-Baltic Canal. You will visit in Goritsy the historic Kiril-Beloserskiy Men’s Monastery founded in 1397. Here you will discover its rich history and magnificent architecture. Sailing toward the Great Lakes of Karelia in the afternoon.

Navigation through the White lake and then crossing of the Lake Onega, one of the biggest lakes in Europe, to reach Kizhi tiny island located at the northern end of the Lake. This excursion is a testament to Russian architecture – tours of rural houses are included - and history. And is the perfect example of destinations which should be part of this experience. This island – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Guided sightseeing tour including several examples of 19th-century peasant architecture; the Church of the Transfiguration with its 22 Domes, made completely of wood (It is an almighty site made all the more impressive by the fact that it was made without the use of nails), treasury of icons and its unique decorated screen; and at the open-air Museum of Wooden Art. See also the Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus, which is believed to be Russia’s oldest wooden building. Walk through the Ethnographic Museum.
All meals on board.

After sailing along the Svir River which connects the two Great Lakes of Onega and Ladoga in the heart of Karelia, we reach the tiny village of Mandrogi. Sitting 295km away from Saint Petersburg it was founded around 1,000 years ago as a tribal settlement – the same village where Peter the Great stayed when he was working at a nearby shipyard. It remained thus, for many years until its destruction during World War Two. In 1996 it was resurrected by Russian entrepreneur Sergey Gutzeit who turned it into the tourist attraction it is today. It’s an interesting insight into how Russian architecture has developed over the centuries, with many of the buildings replicas of those which were destroyed during the war. Mandrogi, a modern make believe village gives a great opportunity to taste a varnished version of aestheticism. Picnic lunch (Weather permitting). Gala dinner - Captain’s Evening.

Arrival in the morning in the former capital of the Tsars’. Saint-Petersburg from streets lined with palaces to its cosmopolitan unspoiled nature is a city which offers far more than visitor’s expectations. It is a city of canals and rivers, built on 101 islands and linked by 350 graceful bridges, thus earning the name "Venice of the North". This magnificent city enchants all its visitors with its legacy of history and the arts, and its striking beauty.
Departure after breakfast for a sightseeing tour. You will see Nevsky Prospect, St Isaac’s Cathedral, the Admiralty, the Church of the Spilled Blood and Peter and Paul’s Fortress, where many of the Romanovs have now been laid to rest. Time at leisure in the afternoon or take optional tours. All meals on board.

Visit to the Hermitage Art Gallery which is perhaps one of Russia’s best known sights but with arguably the greatest number of secret treasures within its walls. Everywhere you look, you see a masterpiece of art or craftsmanship by such artists as Da Vinci, Rembrandt and Kandinsky. Afternoon on your own or optional tours. Breakfast and dinner on board and lunch at a city restaurant.

Excursion to Peterhof. This is a magnificent summer residence and was built to rival Versailles. Situated on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, the palace’s exterior facade and ornate interior are impressive in themselves.  Situated on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, the palace’s exterior facade and ornate interior are impressive in themselves, Visit of the Palace and walk in the garden.  All meals on board.
